History of UX

In the beginning of the XIX century UX (User Experience) started to become recognized as a separate discipline of knowledge. In the 40’s Toyota developed a sociotechnical system called Toyota Production System (TPS) that was known as the first production system directed towards the human. It focused on the interaction between human and technology. Toyota’s philosophy was based on constant development, improvement, decreasing waste and empathize respect toward employees.
In the beginning of 80’s the Human-Computer Integration (HCI) became established as a discipline concentrated on IT and the human factor engineering, but it developed over the years involving other fields of science like economics, sociology, designing interfaces.
In the 90’s a psychologist named Donald Norman joined the team in Apple as an Advanced Technology Group Director and formulated the User Experience (UX) term in the same sense as it is known today.

What is User Experience (UX) ?

User experience (UX) design is the process used by design teams to create products that provide users with meaningful and relevant experiences. This involves the design of the entire process of acquiring and integrating products, including aspects such as branding, design, usability, and functionality.

UX – as the name suggests – focuses on how a user experiences interacting with a particular website or application. Is using the application intuitive for him? Can he easily find the elements and information he is looking for? The task of UX Designers is to design the way a given application works. What elements and information should be placed on the main page? What happens after clicking a button? Where to place key CTAs? Should they be in the form of text or a button? Should the menu be extensive, or will a pager work better?

UX Designer must find answers to all these questions and provide a blueprint for building the application. With this task he is usually not alone – he should consult the whole process with the Project Owner, Product Manager, marketer, investor and everyone who has an influence on the business development. But most of all – UX Designer should test the application many times on the target group in order to develop a useful, comfortable, easily accessible, understandable and satisfactory solution.

“User experience design” is often used interchangeably with terms such as “user interface design” and “usability”. Although usability and user interface (UI) design are important aspects of UX design, they are only a subset of them-UX design also covers a large number of other areas. UX designers focus on the entire process of acquiring and integrating products, including branding, design, usability, and functionality. This is a story that begins even before the device reaches the user.

Since UX design encompasses the entire user journey, it’s a multidisciplinary field. UX designers come from a variety of backgrounds such as visual design, programming, psychology and interaction design. To design for users also means to work with a heightened scope regarding accessibility and accommodating many potential users’ physical limitations, such as reading small text, or different dysfunctions. A UX designer’s typical tasks vary, but often include user research, creating personas, designing low- fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes as well as testing designs. In order to design with the user in mind designers must to be the users’ advocate and keep the users’ needs at the center of all design and development efforts. That’s also why most UX designers work in some form of user-centered work process, and keep channeling their best-informed efforts until they address all of the relevant issues and user needs optimally.

Advantages of UX

UX helps in achieving business objectives

When users visit a website or mobile app, there are tasks they should complete successfully. These tasks help achieving business goals and objectives. It could be signing for a free trial or newsletter, making a purchase, setting up an account, or making a call. People will avoid performing these things if they have a bad experience with the digital product.

The goal of UX design is to assist users in achieving their objectives. UX designers understanding human psychology and combining it with proper research and analytical skills figure out how to design to get the results.

When users are satisfied with a product or service, revenues improve. The benefit of artificially stimulating a product’s sales through advertising will not endure long. Increasing organic interaction rather than relying too heavily on advertising, on the other hand, is always a more promising strategy. You’ll be able to see further into the future of the product and determine the best next steps.

Understanding Problems

Through user-centered design, we can obtain a deeper knowledge of the problems we need to solve. We can clearly see the pain-points of our users and improve our design solutions as a result.

We can become aware of unique behaviors that provide a distinct viewpoint on a problem by studying how people interact with a product or service. What are the steps that users take when they encounter a problem? Don’t assume that users are completely unaware of what you’re talking about. Even if the solution is difficult, always endeavor to provide a user-friendly design solution.Clarifying Vision

Following a user-centered design approach gives a clear understanding of what should be build in the next step. Understand the users’ opinions on a product—what causes problems, how to solve them, and what benefits it provides results in a clear visual depiction of the product’s vision.
